Fine jewellery is durable, but a little care keeps it brilliant. Lotions, perfumes and everyday oils dull a diamond surprisingly fast, so put jewellery on last when getting ready and take rings off before lotion, cleaning or the gym. Clean gently at home with warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush, then dry with a lint-free cloth. Store pieces separately — a soft pouch or a lined box — so harder stones cannot scratch softer metals. Once or twice a year, bring pieces in for a professional clean and a prong check; it is the single best way to catch a loose setting before a stone is lost.
